The fight is back on for the title
A shadow has fallen upon the scenes so lately lighted by the allied victory…. From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the continent…
Now the trumpet summons us again – not as a call to arms, though arms we need; not as a call to battle, though embattled we are, but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle…. A struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease and war itself… in the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger.
The New Frontier of which I speak is not a set of promises – it is a set of challenges… I believe the times demand new invention, innovation, imagination, decision. I am asking each of you to be pioneers of that New Frontier…
Not your usual post match analysis. Some might say a little dramatic. But as Bill Shankly once said: Football isn't a matter of life or death, it's much more important than that.
I have no doubt Kennedy in writing his inaugural address in 1961 knew his words would be used as inspiration, he also must have known he would be quoted after his speech to the UN General Assembly in the same year, as I am sure did Winston Churchill after his speech at Westminster College in 1946. To the reason for me using these words in the Going Down blog... Well, we lost 2:0. Two players dropped out at the eleventh hour and we were playing against a team with more players both on the pitch and on the bench. We battled hard, fought valiantly but other than chasing the game like a group of accountant shapped Duracell bunnies there is very little to report… The fight is back on for the title… but till next week I have left you with a few words from three great leaders.
