Wingrave has a football team that has not lost a league title in 18 months, a netball team recently promoted to Waterloo’s top league, 3 staff members who have taken part in London and Paris marathons in 2009, a WY cycle team which entered a one hundred mile hill climb in June and a WY staff member who came 2nd in the Windsor team triathlon.
So when the idea was raised of a WY corporate team entering the Royal Parks Half Marathon perhaps it was not a surprise that nearly ¼ of our workforce signed up.
Very soon running clubs were set up and productivity plummeted. Our topic of discussion became the herculean event ahead of us. Talk turned from FRS 18 to the impact of carb loading and walk jog run soon took over from the BBC website as our most favoured home page.
As the weekend drew nearer more and more people could be seen leaving work at 17:30 to run laps of Hyde park and more often than not lycra clad staff could be seen in reception post run trying to take on water and re-hydrate for the journey home. In the last week there was a huge effort to raise as much funds as we could and so far over £2,500 has been raised to support more than 150 charities.
The day arrived and the excitement was definitely evident. Every WY staff member who took part either ran the distance for the first time in their life, which is a great achievement in itself and those who had run the distance before achieved really impressive personal bests. The fastest time by a member of staff was 1:31:10 and the average time by the WY team was under 1 hr 50 minutes.
Congratulations to all those who have put in the hours of training and enjoyed the day as well as all those who have supported us and helped us to reach our donation targets.
