New season.. New coach.. Result 10:3 to Going Down

By Dan Smith

The coach rotation policy has meant that once again it is my turn to take on the poisoned chalice of securing a Going Down league title. This season the league looks strong and last night we were well aware that we needed to start well. Our opponents were a great side who we only just beat 6:5 last week, so we knew we were in for a fight.

We started poorly and a great move by St Christophe led to us being 1:0 down within a few minutes. It did not take long for us to get back on track with Ed having a rare blinder up front, bagging 5 by the end of the game. Matt and Geoff both put in great displays to provide for the ever greedy, but this week effective Ed. Andy and myself were solid at the back but let down a few times by our own midfield, one of our two midfielders, the more fuller headed but also fuller ‘waisted’ Matthew Hatton scored a screamer of an own goal from the half way line. It was quite poetic; the language aimed at the poor lad as a result was less poetic.

Alas Going Down got straight back into the game and ended the half 6:2 up. After Half time the returning Phill Bartlett came out of goal, to provide his usual gentle touches and ballerina esque spins to ensure that we ended the game a marginally flattering but convincing 10:3. A great performance from the team, great to have Phil Bartlett back, poor boy has no clue how important his footballing prowess was in getting him his job back. On last nights performance, an excellent decision. Next week the arch enemy that is Punter Southall.
