'Mayfair Belles' Blog

The autumn of 2008 was a good period for WY and English football but hardly a vintage in comparison to the spring of 2009. The green shoots of economic development was raising spirits, as was the emergence of the Mayfair belles.

Mayfair Belles Netball Team

After months of dull football match reports, leagues only won by luck and dubious refereeing. It was time to prove to the boys that the girls too had what it took to win the odd league.

Going Down was proving to be a successful football team and a great reason to go out, get fit and have some fun. We wanted in. It was time to raise the flag for girl power.

So we rounded up the troops and within 24 hours we had a good squad, including some boys willing to shave their legs, straighten their hair and learn the surprisingly complex rules of netball.  After some comic banter with the boys and some generous funding from WY, the Mayfair belles were ready to take on London.

With Emily-Jane Ballard at the helm, the team under her very able and surprisingly feline reactions were: Michelle Clarke, Emma Sell, Lindsay McMillan, Alexa Berger, Sophie Trasenster, Anna Donovan, Kate Baker and Zee Vuma.

Third Win in a row for the Belles

 By Michelle Clarke - 21 June 2010

Mayfair Belles returned this month to the 2nd Division at Waterloo with much anticipation and surely a glimmer of hope that we won’t have to return each week, with another loss under our belt as we too frequently did in our plight for division 1. Read More ...

"Waterloo, I was defeated, you won the war"

By Kate Baker - 19th May 2010

Come on the Belles!

By Emma Sell - 4th November 2009

This week we were up against Chantrey Vellacott who were the team that were promoted ahead of us from the Second Division. However we had beaten them in our last game against them last season and so we were hoping for another victory…

As the game started, we soon pushed ahead and were leading by about 3 or 4 goals. They had actually started the game a player down, (and it happened to be their Goal Shooter!).. Read More..

First Win of the Season for The Belles

By Michelle Clarke - 26th October 2009

So, after a rocky start to Division 1, newly promoted Mayfair Belles found their first win of the season on Monday night.  Losing the first 3 games left us all feeling rather demoralised and wondering were we ever going to clock a win on the board!  Pre match one of the umpires gave us a little pep talk which perhaps paid off more than we realised!.  Promotion has proved a little tough as there is quite a noticeable difference between Division 1 & 2, however we came out fighting on Monday and a victory was finally ours. Read More...
