Having started my CA training at a Big 4 accountancy firm, I moved to Wingrave Yeats in 2007 where I completed my CA training and I am now qualified. Is working for a smaller firm better than working for a Big 4 firm? YES, without a doubt. Working for a smaller firm I have found that I am less of a number and more of an individual. As a trainee you are not pigeon-holed into ‘audit’ or ‘tax’, but encouraged to find the mix which suits you best. My portfolio ranges from small owner-managed businesses to AIM-listed entities, from media clients to those in the automotive-technology field, no one day is alike.
Wingrave Yeats is a very fun place to work and everyone is encouraged to voice their ideas and get involved with the future of the firm. I feel very much in control of my own development at a smaller firm and the partners are extremely supportive in outside interests, promoting A work-life balance that other firms would be jealous of! As the Chair of the ICAS student society, CAPELLA, I am given time to fulfill my responsibilities; managing the UK committee and organising social and career-focused events. I have recently been given time to film web-blogs for the Institute about my CAPELLA responsibilities and I am soon to film a video interview for Knowledge Peers, a membership organisation for people who run growth businesses in the UK. This is another way in which Wingrave is going beyond the norm, to help educate other businesses and pass on the knowledge that has been built up by our partners & teams over the years.
