I joined Wingrave Yeats in January 2007 after leaving a Big Four firm, in hindsight this was the best decision I have made in my professional career to date.
I was part way through my ACA qualification when I left the Big Four firm, Wingrave Yeats’ flexible approach to the exams suited my style of learning far better than the Big Four’s approach. I was able to discuss how I studied best for exams with a manager who was able to tailor the remainder of the ACA to suit my needs. Personally, I had come from an arts background where learning theories from Plato and Aristotle was far removed from the accounting world of double entry and corporation tax! Wingrave Yeats gave me the opportunity to study in a manner which suited my style of learning and as a result I finished my exams passing each first time. I feel the support provided by the managers and the fact Wingrave considered my individual needs was instrumental in my exam success. Since finishing the ACA exams I have decided to sit the CTA exams and again I have been allowed the flexibility to choose how best to prepare for these exams.
In addition to my studies, I have been given the opportunity to work on a large and diverse range of clients over the past two and a half years. My experiences at a Big Four firm had been limited however every member of the team at Wingrave Yeats is instrumental to the success of the individual projects. This dynamic approach to work means that more junior members of staff are exposed to areas of work far quicker than at larger firms with far greater responsibility. This means that from an individual perspective, working life at Wingrave is challenging but hugely rewarding with great opportunities to develop as an accountant and an individual.
Personally, I have a portfolio of clients covering a large number of sectors including both large and small companies which means that I am constantly looking at new and exciting areas. I am lucky in the sense that I come to work and am excited at the prospect of working in a diverse and flexible environment. Recently I was seconded to a FTSE 100 company for a two month period to prepare the consolidated tax figures for the year ended February 2009. Wingrave Yeats has provided me with the opportunity to develop my accounting skills which I have learnt while studying for my ACA. In addition, my role is primarily as a corporation tax specialist however I have been given the opportunity to work both in the personal tax and in the business advisory departments which has improved my personal development.
Wingrave Yeats’ culture like its client base is hugely diverse. There is a strong emphasis to enjoying oneself at work while at the same time working in an environment which is conducive to business development. There is a lot of extra-curricular activities to become involved with at Wingrave throughout the year for example pub quizzes in Winter, sports day in the Summer not forgetting the firm away day which has been to Berlin and Budapest the last two years. In addition to this the ‘office banter’ is second to none which adds to the overall enjoyment of working at Wingrave.
