Going down secured another league victory last night after a hard fought game against Rigford Seahawks.
After a fantastic result last week against our closest rivals baggies we knew that a win in our last game would give us the league title – anything less and we would be relying on other results. To make matters even more interesting our opponents knew that if they won their last two remaining games they too would win the league.
The game kicked off under floodlights and the wet weather meant that the ball was skidding off the surface and the opening exchanges were a little fiery. It was obvious that the first goal would be key and fortunately it was Going Down the were soon celebrating, a ball rolled forward from our Goalkeeper – Claudio the Cat, allowed myself to collect the ball in far corner and after ducking a couple of strong tackles I was able to get off a shot that thudded against the backboard of the goal. Our great start was compounded when a fumble form their otherwise solid goalkeeper allowed Phil to smash the ball home as the oppo’s defenders stood motionless.
Then perhaps came the turning point of the game – after a putting in a strong but fair tackle Geoff found himself on the end of some rather pathetic handbags from one of their players – fortunately the ref saw this and sin binned their player for 2 minutes – it was to prove to be a crucial 2 minutes. From the resulting free-kick we worked the ball around nicely until Geoff found himself with so much time in the middle of the pitch that he could have sat down and enjoyed a nice cup of tea. Instead however Geoff fashioned the ball onto his left foot and seeing their keeper creeping towards his right post curled a delightfully placed shot into the other corner. Definitely a contender for goal of the season. Immediately afterwards the “powerplay” was soon become doubly effective, thinking that an angle was to tight to shoot from the opposition this time allowed Matt far too much time on the ball and he too curled a shot past their keeper.
Half time 4-0, we couldn’t have asked for a better start but as all the shouts of “its still 0-0 guys” proved we were determined not to let the game slip. The second half proved more a defensive affair for us with Dan and Andy putting a cracking performance at the back- shutting down and tackling anything that moved. Including one fantastic tackle from Andy that seemed to clear out 3 of their players in one fell swoop. Eventually we did concede towards the end but it mattered not as a fantastic 4-1 victory meant that once again Going Down had taken another league title! In addition I and the rest of the team would like to say a very big thank you to all the partners for their continuing support of the team – and an especially big thanks to Giles for coming to watch last night.
