Going Down vs. St. James

By Ed Gray - 4th June 2010

On glorious summers evening Going Down looked to continue their good run and remain within a point of the top. On arrival the opposition were barely recognisable having brought in at least 5 ringers for a game they clearly considered their biggest of the season.

Fortunately for Going Down they had a full complement of 8 as in the evening sunshine the game started at a quick pace and it was clear that rolling subs would be needed to keep everyone fresh. Some neat work by Geoff and Phil in the middle managed to produce some exceptional saves from the oppo’s keeper – needless to say he was one of the players brought in especially for the game. However midway through the first half Phil found himself through on goal and despite the keeper getting a strong hand to his shot the ball crept over the line. For Going Down’s second however the keeper was left with no chance – Geoff picking up the ball and embarking on a mazy run before rifling the ball into the top corner, a fantastic strike. Going Down then managed to pick up a slight fortunate third before half time – some good pressure from Matt cause the ball to ricochet forward and Ed was first to the ball and managed to scuff a left foot shot past the sprawling goalie.

Half time 3-0

The second half seemed to produce a lot of effort from the Going Down players but with little reward – perhaps it was the heat or the comfortable 3-0 lead but Going Down created some great openings but managed to squander most of them – although the opposition goal continued to be in cracking form. The one goal of the half came from Matt after neat interplay with jack down the left hand side he slotted home underneath the advancing keeper. Special mention however should also be given to Matt for some of the most speculative pot shots seen outside of the World Cup – including one left foot half volley from inside his own half that was more threatening to any spectators than the opposition goal.

Full time 4-0

Perhaps not Going Down’s best performance but a well battled win and another 3 points that keeps the title dream alive.
