Going Down maintained their 100% track record at the start of the new season with a 2-0 victory over Punter Southall, who rumour has it are also a team of accountants:
It was already scheduled to be a late kick off last night but we didn’t kick off until nearly 8.15 – with perhaps half a mind on a nice cup of tea and curling up on the sofa to the latest Midsummer Murderers offering it was soon evident that we were all half asleep. The first half passed with little to note except for Dan Smith being told by the ref to take a 2 minute breather for a couple of typically robust challenges. – Going down had most of the pressure but created few good opportunities, whilst the opposition were happy to play the ball around at the back and more annoyingly back to their goal keeper (who can’t be tackled) at every chance. Half time came surprisingly quickly with the score still at 0-0.
At half time the Gaffer (Andy C) fired us up and in no uncertain terms told us that we needed to pull our finger out and be more aggressive in the tackle and generally push higher up the pitch. This seemed to spark us into life and the first couple of minutes of the second half saw a reinvigorated Going Down, our new found energy soon paid off, the ball was rolled down into one of the corners and then passed back to Matt who finished with a low hard strike into the bottom corner from just inside his own half. The second goal was a gift from the opposition – after giving away a free kick on the half way line we lined up to defend – however the opposition managed to play the free-kick backwards towards their last man who managed to slip and miss the ball completely (What’s known as a Matt Hatton Special) fortunately I (Ed) was the first to react and managed to shoot past their keeper. With a few minutes to go however, the ref decided to make things difficult for us by sin binning both Geoff and Matt for two minutes a piece (both for a couple of rather innocuous challeneges) – in fact we had to play with only 3 outfield players for a few seconds.
We hung on at the end however and were happy to keep a clean sheet – not our best performance by a long way but another 3 points and we’re still top of the league.
As an aside you’ll be pleased to know that Geoff didn’t rekindle his brief romance with their striker Olly – although Olly does have hair that Sam would be proud off.
