'Going Down' Blog

In the autumn of 2007 a group of young men decided enough was enough and declared war on their expanding waistlines. Their names are Geoff Graham, Matt Hatton, Daniel Smith, Ed Gray, Andrew Costin, Philip Barlett, Nick Ashton and Claudio the Cat: but the world would know them as 'Going Down'.

Going Down have now won 4 Top Corner league tables.

Keep up to date with the often hilarious weekly match reports written by the team.

Champions Once Again..

By Dan Smith - 17th June 2010

It was first against second and a game that would settle the title - It was always going to be tough.

One Touch Too Much were looking awesome and had already beaten us 3:1 this season, with their main threat and best player having scored 26 goals in 7 games. He had to be stopped and credit to GD’s fight and determination, he would not be adding to his formidable goal scoring record against us. Read More...

Going Down vs. One Rule United

By Phil Bartlett - 10th June 2010

Buoyed by their clean sheet victory last match, GD took to the pitch again in a game that would see them go to the top of the table if they won.  Rule One United the opponents, or rather, the unfortunate prey. Read More...

Going Down vs. St. James

By Ed Gray - 4th June 2010

On glorious summers evening Going Down looked to continue their good run and remain within a point of the top. On arrival the opposition were barely recognisable having brought in at least 5 ringers for a game they clearly considered their biggest of the season. Read More...

Going Down vs. Punter Southall

By Phil Bartlett - 27th May 2010

Last night’s encounter was always destined for fireworks as Going Down took to the battle ground once more against our bitterest rivals, Punter Southall, who fielded GD’s most hated villain, Pete the Mosquito.  GD had lost top spot in the league as they didn’t play the previous week so nothing less than a win was needed. Going Down 5 – 2 St James’s

By Matthew Hatton - 30th April 2010

The signs are looking good for Going Down after another win maintained Daniel Smith’s perfect record as manager this season continued.

After the day’s roasting heat (up to 17C), WY were slow out of the blocks with St James’s making most of the running but a mistake in defence let in Phil who passed to Matt who stroked home a good finish. This was however, not a sign of things to come as almost all other finishing from Going Down was on the abject side of utterly woeful. Read More...

Match Day 4 – 100 % Record Maintained

By Dan Smith - 26th April 2010

After a good start to the season we were up against a team who had got the better of us a few times, although never finished above us in the league. They are indeed our Southampton to Manchester United if you will - a bogey side.

Unsurprisingly the game was tight. We had the better of the first half, but our commitment to the 50:50 challenges was lacking the usual passion that we are known for, meaning that the first half ended goalless. Read More ....

Hot off the press - The Big Match Report:

Going Down vs. AFC Super Hans

By Phil Barlett - 25th March 2010

Last night’s big match was billed as the one to watch, the match of the season so far, the Ali vs Foreman of the Top Corner league.  We were playing last season’s league winners, wearing their outrageously camp all-pink strip, but no less formidable for it.

The odds were against us as we only had the bare 6 with Matty ‘the deserter’ Hatton playing away at Villa.  Surely only a madman would’ve chosen them over us?  Say n’more. Read More....

New season. New coach. Result 10-3 to Going Down

By Daniel Smith - 18th March 2010

The coach rotation policy has meant that once again it is my turn to take on the poisoned chalice of securing a Going Down league title. This season the league looks strong and last night we were well aware that we needed to start well. Our opponents were a great side who we only just beat 6:5 last week, so we knew we were in for a fight.  Read More...

Going Down 6 – 2 Rule One United

By Matthew Hatton - 3rd December 2009

After the heroics of the EFG-lite team two weeks ago, the big boys were back last night and put paid to Rule One with a 6-2 victory on what can be said to have been not the most beautiful evening weather-wise.

After most players arrived by bike, we were already soaked to the skin before even kicking a ball so weren’t particularly enamoured with the 10 minute delay that was enforced as the opposition turned up late.  Read More...

EFG vs. Going Down

By Dan Smith - 20th November 2009

Going Down were metaphorically and it must be said physically very light weight this week. The EFG audit had taken its toll.
