EFG vs. Going Down

By Dan Smith

Going Down were metaphorically and it must be said physically very light weight this week. The EFG audit had taken its toll.

Matthew Hatton, Geoff Graham and Andrew Costin were not available to represent their company as stalwarts of the Going Down campaign. Sadly for us they were all wearing their auditors hats and I have no doubt they were all pulling their extensive weight up North. It did indeed look bleak for the football team. Alas we picked ourselves up with the fighting spirit that the team has become known and opted to face up to the challenge. Our opponents; an Irish side who requested an early kick off so that they could watch the qualifiers later that night - a request which we graciously accepted.

We started brightly with both Daniel Ward and Edward Gray selfishly not releasing the ball and shooting at any opportunity. A policy which we have seen in abundance with young Edward but not a quality that we thought prevalent in young Daniel, alas he was trying to emulate the great Geoff Graham, and it must be said he was doing this with gusto. Pinging the ball in from every angle and in the words of the lovely Irish girl watching intently: “Those two with the lovely hair are very good if not a little ‘showy offy’, but I dare say rather dishy”

Aside from the interest from the sidelines the two boys continued to ‘strut their stuff’.

It was a good solid game which saw us 4:1 up at half time. We had no substitutes so knew our fitness was key, we had a lapse in concentration which saw them catch us up with an early goal. Everything was still to play for. We strengthened our lead after the goal with a fine shot from the kick off by young Edward. The opposition complained as they felt it was not within the rules, had they known what was to happen in about 3 hours their complaints may have been put into perspective. A great goal from Ed, within the rules and indeed a first in the league.

The game ended 8:3. A fine display. A hatrick for both Edward Gray and Daniel Ward and I am told one of our young strikers exchanged numbers with said Irish lass. Looks like Andrew, Matt and Geoff will be fighting to reclaim their places.

Another good win to put the title back within our grasp.
