Going Down vs. Punter Southall

Match Day 8 (of 12):

By Phil Bartlett 27 May 2010

Last night’s encounter was always destined for fireworks as Going Down took to the battle ground once more against our bitterest rivals, Punter Southall, who fielded GD’s most hated villain, Pete the Mosquito.  GD had lost top spot in the league as they didn’t play the previous week so nothing less than a win was needed.

The referee was visibly anxious as the first half kicked off and he didn’t have to wait long for the first fracas.  As Geoff shielded the ball in the corner, Pete the Mosquito screamed, ‘he strangled me!’, clutching his neck.  Everyone rolled their eyes knowing it was a tickle at worst and, ‘play on’, was the ref’s justified reply.  The strangling accusation was later aimed at Ed too.  Experts may claim he has a complex of some sort.

GD dominated possession with fluid passing and movement making Punter pant.  A break from Phil led to a penalty which Geoff tucked away with ease.  1-0 to GD.

GD continued to press and harry poor Punter from the re-start.  Even our defenders were pushing up ominously which resulted in a moment of pure glory for Dan.  In the post-match interview Dan described the moment:

‘... a Messi-esque goal from me.  I broke free from my defensive duties with aplomb after seeing the smallest of gaps, displaying a turn of pace not to dissimilar to a freight train in full flight before composing myself to unleash a shot which the keeper could only watch as it flew into the top corner, to put it into words it was shear poetry in motion.’

Modest.  2-0 to GD.

Then it was Matt’s turn to lead the onslaught.  He dribbled the ball, turning the defender inside out, and winning a second penalty.  Bravo!  He confidently strode up to take it but missed like all those players that have dashed England’s dreams in World Cups past.  Boo!

The first half ended with another incident involving the Mosquito.  A solid tackle from Dan when they were both sprinting towards the base line saw him slam the Mosquito into the fence.  Another high-pitched scream of protest followed by another rolling of the eyes from the ref.

The second half saw further domination from GD, a well taken goal from Ed and yet another classy strike from Geoff.  The match ended on an explosive note as Ed steamed into a challenge that squashed the mosquito flat.  The dark side had surfaced and revenge taken ruthlessly.  Ed didn’t even wait for the card before traipsing off the pitch to the anger management therapist.

4-0 the final score.

The man of the match award went to Geoff for the second game in a row, whose potency knows no bounds.  It’s now a two-horse race for the title.  With only four games to play, will it be GD or One Touch Too Much?  Watch this space.
